Old Rectory, Harrogate
House extension in Harrogate’s conservation area
Proposals to extend the kitchen into ancillary store rooms at the back of the house led to the discovery of a Tudor fire surround in a small boiler room. Considerable non-intrusive research allowed us to piece together the form of the room prior to its alteration throughout the C20th. The work involved a specialist repair to the mantle of the fire surround (damaged when a boiler was fitted in the 1960s); replacement of all C20th steelwork with new oak beams; replacement sash windows; lime plaster to the internal walls; and the recording and protection of a Georgian stone floor.
